Winter Varsity Sports Check-In

Each of Blake’s varsity sports teams look to improve off of their current successes and be strong teams to look out for in the postseason. Every sport is doing pretty well, with a collective record of 53-21, with each team sitting roughly around a 61% win percentage overall. While some are performing really well, other teams are working hard to prepare for playoffs. Everyone has shown a lot of potential and promise to make a strong playoff run.

Boys Basketball – Currently 11-3. They started off the season with a loss to nationally ranked Good Counsel. However, from earlier on in the season, they have put together an impressive 6-game winning streak after beating division rival Sherwood on Jan. 17, putting the team at 1st place in their division.

Girls Basketball – Standing at 3-11. Their first win was a thriller against Springbrook 41-40, along with a win against Wheaton 54-24. Their most recent win came in another matchup with Wheaton, where Blake won in another close game. The girls’ team looks to improve and build off of their 2 game winning streak as they near the end of the regular season.

Bocce – Doing well at 3-1. The Bocce team beat Sherwood, Watkins Mill, and Clarksburg, after losing to Paint Branch in their first game.

Competitive Cheer – Competitive cheer has been doing very well, and so far have earned 1st place in 2 competitions, invitationals at Seneca Valley and Springbrook high schools. They are preparing for their next competition, which will be hosted at Blake on Jan. 28.

Boys Indoor Track – Blake’s boys’ indoor track has been performing well in their meets and tournaments, especially at the Hispanic Games in New York. At the Howard County Winterfest, junior Benick Akeh finished 7th overall in the 500 m dash. This is a strong team that has shown a lot of skill and potential throughout their season.

Girls Indoor Track –Β  At the Howard County Winter invitational tournament, the girls’ team placed high in most of the events. They got 1st in the 4×400 M Relay, 3rd in 4 x 800 M, 5th in the high jump, 2nd in the triple jump, 4th in the 55 M dash, and 5th in the 300 M dash. This girls’ team has demonstrated their strength through their accomplishments throughout the season.

Boys Swim & Dive – They are currently 4-2, beating Kennedy twice, as well as Gaithersburg and Watkins Mill. Their only losses were to Northwood, by a score of 110-72, and Springbrook, by a score of 98-81.

Girls Swim & Dive – Girls swim and dive performed pretty well last season, and look to continue and improve from that record this year. So far, they are undefeated at 6-0, beating Kennedy, Gaithersburg and Northwood, Watkins Mill, and Springbrook.

Wrestling – The wrestling team has started off their season pretty well, with a record of 3-5, with most of their losses being pretty close. At the Mad Mats Tournament on Dec. 11, they finished in 13th place, out of 18 teams, with 74 points. Freshman Brody Matson placed 3rd in the 106 weight class to lead the Bengals. Sophomore Quinn Weaver placed 4th and Senior Khamari Burnett placed 6th in their respective weight classes.
