Every MCPS student needs to graduate with 75 Student Service Learning (SSL) hours. However, most students only worry about these activities in the summer when they’re not clouded with extracurriculars and schoolwork. But why not get some of them out of the way around the holidays and not have to worry about them in the future?

Here’s a list of volunteer work opportunities that are all great ways to knock out those hours. Even if you have 75+ you could definitely do more and perhaps get recognized at graduation, not to mention scholarships!

This is the perfect time to start volunteering; it’s the holiday season and there are a lot of people and groups that need help.

The activities below are current opportunities:

Are you into baking? You can earn SSL hours for doing something you enjoy! If so, 20 cookies, 20 cupcakes, or 1 baked loaf = 1 hour of service. Then drop it off at a location in Hyattsville.

Make baked goods for families in need | Montgomery County Volunteer Center

This is an ongoing opportunity to volunteer with seniors with many activities. Sunrise of Silver Spring. This is also ongoing so sign up anytime!

Intergenerational Volunteer Program Opportunity

You can help out with Manna food distribution! This is especially important during Thanksgiving time. Help by giving free food to people who can’t afford it. Check requirements! This one is an ongoing opportunity but be sure to check the schedule so you can sign up at an appropriate time. Located on Old Columbia Pike

Make Face masks for homeless kids. Make and drop off in Colesville.

Student Service Learning (SSL) – Montgomery County Public Schools, Rockville, MD

If you do well in academics you can be a tutor for SSL hours! You can sign up anytime, and it’s virtual!
