Help Save MCPS Gymnastics
Just recently, gymnastics coaches here at Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) learned through a verified source (not through MCPS) that, after the 2026 season, MCPS plans to cut girls’ gymnastics.
Girls’ gymnastics goes back several decades here at MCPS. Thousands of girls who participate in gymnastics cherish this the most throughout high school. Gymnastics has a diverse and welcoming community of people from all kinds of backgrounds and skill levels. For some, high school gymnastics is the only way to participate in the sport they love, as non-school competitive gymnastics costs thousands of dollars each year.
Gymnastics is one of the unique sports among high schools, as itβs highly technical, creative, and also female-dominated. Considering the type of world we live in, where women are typically shoved to the side, gymnastics is one of the few sports in which women shine.
Each year alone, their team grows by 150%, which shows how much gymnastics is loved and cared about. Ms. Johnson mentioned that, βThere is definitely a huge interest in the sport, we just need to advertise & recruit students to join the team.β
The benefits of gymnastics are that βgymnastics can be the foundation for many other sports, theatre, and life.β As well as keeping gymnastics here at high schools, it makes it affordable for families who canβt afford the lessons. Gymnastics is also very artistic, compared to other sports where they compete, and the team with the highest scores wins. They compete by showing off their creativity.
Gymnastics also teaches people discipline, time management, and consistency. It also helps people meet new people and form bonds.
Gymnastics is important here at MCPS, so sign the petition to help keep girlsβ gymnastics!
