Girls Varsity Basketball Preview
With a new year and a new gymnasium, basketball season is back. While our Lady Bengals had a bit of a rough season last year, going 7-14, they plan to solidify their status as one of the top tier programs for girls basketball.
This year, they will retain a number of juniors and sophomores from last season who look to play critical roles for the success of the team. It will be interesting to see which of our athletes will step up.
The girls have a tough 20 games ahead of them. Starting their 2019-20 campaign at Seneca Valley, the girls look for revenge against the team that beat them in a down to the wire game the year before.
The week after, they will host Laurel which, last year, made it to the 4A South Regional Title Game.
Following Laurel, they will host Wheaton, which they punished 57-40 last year at Wheaton. They will travel to Paint Branch, the following week, for the first of their four NEC rival games.
The girls will be on the road again, traveling to Clarksburg, to take on the 4A North Runner-Ups. The girls will then play two back to back NEC Rivalry games at home. The first against Springbrook on Friday, January 10, and the second against Paint Branch Monday, January 13th.
After the NEC showdown, they will be back on the road against Conference Rival, Sherwood, which beat them in a 58-50 nail-bitter last season.
Following Sherwood, the girls will host Northwood. Then after they will have a three-game stretch on the road against Kennedy, Springbrook, and Watkins Mill.
The following two games will feature the girls at home versus Blair and Bethesda Chevy Chase(BCC). They will then travel to Churchill, to try and avenge a team that managed to beat them 65-15 a season ago.
They will then finish their season off with Quince Orchard and Magruder at home, and Rockville on the road.
The girls will have their Senior Night February 18, vs Walter Johnson. Blake expects a strong season from our Lady Bengals. But no matter what the outcome will be, we know that the girls will give their all every time they step on the court.
Some notable games to watch:
Laurel @ Blake (Friday, December 13). This game may be the toughest test for the Bengals. In their second game, the Bengals will face, the 4a South Runner-up, Laurel. This game will really show us where our Bengals stand among elite competitions.
Paint Branch @ Blake (Monday, January 10, 2020). An intense atmosphere, filled with emotion against a hated NEC rival. No matter how rough a season it may be for either team, the game always ends up coming down to the wire.
Blake @ Watkins Mill [Tuesday, January 28, 2020]. The Wolverines knocked the girls out of the playoff tournament last season. This game will be an amazing chance to pay back Watkins Mill with a loss at their home court.
