Darrell Britt-Gibson: From Blake High School to Hollywood
After 21 long years, Darrell Britt-Gibson, a name increasingly making waves in Hollywood, traces his roots back to the familiar halls of Blake High School. There, he began booking small roles, which eventually turned into being cast in award-winning shows and movies, some of which include She Taught Love, Fear Street trilogy, and The Wire, amongst many others.
When asked about Britt-Gibsonβs time at Blake High School, he told journalists, βI was bad.β But he also includes that he was friends with everyone and never had one βgroupβ that heβd go to time and time again. What influenced his path and future, he tells Blake journalists, was having supporting teachers βwho [believe] in youβ is what mattered the most, and his mother who never gave up on him and is his βbiggest inspiration.β He encourages Blake’s students to βlean intoβ our teachers for support and if they βpour into you,β to βdrink from that.β He makes it evident that having encouraging people around you will be essential to success.
Britt-Gibson’s journey to Hollywood was far from conventional. After dropping out of college, he took a leap of faith and moved to Los Angeles. “I just knew that it was gonna happen,” he recalls. His determination and unwavering belief in himself paid off, as he landed roles in acclaimed projects like We Own This City, one of his more impactful roles. He mentioned the project took a toll on him mentally as he plays Jemell Rayam, a police officer who had committed several crimes. Playing a role such as Rayam was difficult for him because his uncle was a victim of police brutality. However, Britt-Gibson noted that his portrayal of a police officer is important as it offers a different perspective on the βall cops are badβ narrative.
When asked about his approach to acting, Britt-Gibson emphasizes the importance of authenticity and immersion. “I’m very intentional about the stuff that I’m doing,” he says. “I call it the 10 minutes. I work on these 10 minutes tirelessly.” This meticulous preparation allows him to inhabit his characters fully and deliver compelling performances. As for aspiring actors, Britt-Gibson offers invaluable advice: “Don’t overthink it, don’t, don’t. Just try to do that and then you’ll really… That’s the most important person in the world. So start building.” He also stresses the significance of building strong relationships with fellow actors and industry professionals.
