Winter Sports Midway Update 2025

Boys Basketball:

So far Blake Boys Varsity Basketball is undefeated with a record of 9-0 and 8-0 in the conference. The top three scorers are Babatunde (Baba) Oladotun, a sophomore, Armani Fowkles, and Christian Kennard both juniors. Head coach Desmin Wade has continued to prove that his team will continue to dominate boys’ basketball in Montgomery County. Have a great rest of the season Bengals! 

Girls Basketball:

Blake Girls Varsity Basketball currently has a record of 3-6 and 3-4 in the conference. New head coach, Kathy Boehlert has led the team to win 2 more games than the previous program leaders this time last year. Sophomore Chozen Lewis is the leading scorer along with junior Kayla Kamya, a varsity member since her freshman year who leads in rebounds. Jayla James (senior) is the third-highest scorer. The team hopes to further improve their record, and compete in the playoffs starting February 18th. You got this Bengals! 

Boys Indoor Track:

Blake Boys’ Indoor Track and Field placed 37th (3 points scored by Brendan Moise in Triple Jump) at HOCO Winterfest. Johnson Mbeng (55m), Dylan Legaspi (800m), Zachary Oh (Mile,3200m,2 Miles), and Semir Kemal (3200m,2 Miles) all placed in the top 8 or higher at The Armory Hispanic Games. Semir Kemal placed first in the 1600m and Brendan Moise placed 8th in the triple jump at the Montgomery Invitational. The team placed 12th at MCPS Meet #3 with Makai Etienne (3 pts LJ), Johnson Mbeng (8 pts SP), and Brendan Moise (6 pts TJ) all scoring points for the squad. The team also competed on January 18th in Virginia Beach for the established VA Showcase track meet. Blake boys placed 8th at the MCPS Indoor Championships on the 22nd of January and Mamadou Diop (55mH), Zachary Oh (3200m), Semir Kemal (3200m), the 4x800m squad (Oh, Legaspi, Vanegas, and Kemal), and Brendan Moise all scored in 8th place or higher for a total of 26 points. On February 8th the team will head to Regionals, where they placed 7th last year. Good luck Bengals!

Girls Indoor Track:

Girls Indoor Track and Field placed 4th at MCPS Meet #1 with Halle Whern (55m, LJ, TJ), Jaayah (Lovey) Jenkins (300m), Sierra Swangin (HJ), and Raeona Fisher (HJ) all scoring points in the top 8 or higher. The team placed 7th at HOCO Winterfest with Jaayah (Lovey) Jenkins (500m, 4×400), Sifen Tusee (1600), Trynice Knight (4×400), Emilie Creighton (4×400), Noelle Gardner (4×400), and Sierra Swangin (HJ) all scoring. Trynice Knight (55m) and Sierra Swangin (HJ) placed 7th and 2nd respectively in their events at The Armory Hispanic Games. At the MOCO Invitational, Jaayah (Lovey) Jenkins (300m,4×800), Emilie Creighton (1600m,4×800), Veronica Garcia (4×800), Sifen Tusse (4×800), Sierra Swangin (HJ), and Raeona Fisher (HJ) all placed in the top 8 or higher. At MCPS Meet #3 the team placed 4th with Chandler Bell (55m), Simone Carter (500m, 4×400), Veronica Garcia (800m), Sifen Tusee (3200m), Jaayah (Lovey) Jenkins (4×400), Noelle Gardener (4×400), Trynice Knight (4×400), Sierra Swangin (HJ), Raeona Fisher (HJ), Halle Whren (LG, TJ), and Imani Ngala (TJ) all scoring for the Bengals! The team also competed on January 18th in Virginia Beach for the stacked VA Showcase track meet, including top athletes from all over the country. Blake brought athletes to the MCPS Championships on the 22nd of January, where they, as a team, have placed first for three years in a row! The girls scored 66.5 points beating out every other MCPS high school. Sierra Swangin (HJ, LJ), Raeona Fisher (HJ), Halle Whern (LJ, TJ), Jaayah (Lovey) Jenkins (300m, 500m, 800m, 4x400m), Sifen Tusse (3200m, 4×800), the 4x200m squad (Bell, Whren, Knight, Adams), the 4x800m group (Carter, Creighton, Garcia, and Tusse), and the 4×400 team (Carter, Jenkins, Gardner, Knight) all scored points for Blake. On February 8th the team will go on to Regionals, where they placed 2nd last year. Go get ’em Bengals! 

Cheer:

Varsity Cheer can be seen performing at the girls’ and boys’ basketball games this season. They have also ventured on to cheering at wrestling matches. You can also look out for them at their competitions!

Boys Swim and Dive:

Boys Swim and Dive has a record of 1-3 with a 93-89 win at Martin Luther King Jr. Swim Center against Seneca Valley. The top boys on the team are Santiago Bascope, Jack Dawson, and Phoenix Vaonakis. Their next swim meet is on January 25, at Germantown Swim Center. Swim strongly Bengals! 

Girls Swim and Dive:

Girls Swim and Dive has had a rough season this year with a record of 0-4. Their closest loss was 92-90 on December 7th. The top swimmer is Andrea Dworak. Their next swim meet is on January 25, at Germantown Swim Center. Good luck with the rest of the season swimmers!

Poms:

The BHS Poms placed 3rd at their first invitational of the season! Their next competition is the Springbrook Invitational on January 25th, 2025. The captains this year are Neive Carr, Chami Manaukulasuriya, and Lexi Diaz. “You know,” the BHS Poms got it this season! 

Varsity Wrestling:

The captains for wrestling this year are Mohamed Lahai (Senior), Quinn Weaver (Senior), James Zimmerman (Senior), Brody Matson (Junior), Skyler Gibson-Roberts (Senior), and Cynthia Luna (Senior). The team placed 4th at Mad Mats with Eli Moy, Brody Matson, Abdul Shakeri, Quinn Weaver, Zahid Shujaee, Mohamed Lahai, James Zimmerman, and Alejandro Marquez-Garcia all placing. The girl’s wrestlers competed at the FSK Female Holiday Showcase and Cynthia Luna placed 4th! At one of the hardest tournaments in the state, the girls placed 16th out of 44 teams with Cynthia Luna (4th), Avah Taylor (5th), and Yoselyn Ventura (7th) all scoring. Blake also hosted its first-ever girls’ dual meet against Laurel High School. Blake finished 5th at the Panther Invitational and Eli Moy, Brody Matson, Andrew Goglia, Zahid Shujaee, Arshad Shujaee, James Zimmerman, and Alejandro Marquez-Garcia all placed. Keep strong this season Bengals!
