Is Celsius The New Coffee?

When browsing through the Washington Post, there’s quite an interesting article. The U.S Congressmen are drinking celsius, and they aren’t just drinking it occasionally, they’re essentially depending on it. A machine Stocker who works in the U.S. Capitol reports that at the end of the day the Celsius vending machine will likely be cleared. So what caused even the government officials of the U.S. to also drink the popular sports drink, Celsius?

Whether to stay awake during school hours or to excel in sports, an increasing amount of students have drunk Celsius on a daily or consistent basis. At sporting events, such as swim meets, Blake’s high school swimmers often can be seen chugging down cans of Celsius.

Giselle Wyche, a junior here at Blake, states that when she had her first can of Celsius during her basketball game she β€œfelt an unusual burst of energy and was bouncing off the walls. I was jumping up and down and when my teammate scored I jumped so high I felt that I almost touched the ceiling!”

What is Celsius? It’s an energy drink marketed to athletes. The average can of Celsius contains200 mg of caffeine. Celsius cans essentially range from 100 to 300 mg of caffeine per 12-ounce can. The Celsius β€œHeat” line has 300 mg in its 16-ounce cans. Keep in mind, the average person should not exceed 400 milligrams of caffeine in one day. Each can also has around 10 calories. One can of Celsius is roughly equivalent to two cups of coffee (an average cup of coffee has around 95 mg of caffeine). Celsius promotes its product as clinically tested, citing studies that support its thermogenic benefits and metabolism-boosting additions.

The original design of Celsius mainly emphasized its benefits for weight loss, building muscle mass, providing energy, and burning calories. This most likely led to the perception of Celsius to simply be a weight-loss product or calorie-burning enhancer. Several reports state that it’s likely the rebranding of Celsius that allowed its popularity to soar. Many people speculate that the new design of the can most likely caught the eye of more consumers; the old design most likely scared away consumers who instead would want to carry around a can that says β€œBurn More Calories” in bold lettering.

Interestingly enough, Celsius, since 2022, has had its own campus program known as β€œCelsius University,” that allows its students to learn how to build a brand. As a student at Celsius University, you can enjoy ambassador perks, run events, and make connections.

It would only make sense for a successful business such as Celsius to have sponsorships with influencers. Some of their biggest influencer deals are with Jake Paul (YouTuber), David Dobrik (YouTuber), Juan Soto (baseball player), and the Sturniolo triplets (TikTok Influencers). Celsius also has NIL partnerships with several freshman basketball stars. As of 2022, PepsiCO has invested a whopping $550 million in Celsius, meaning they own 8.5% of Celsius in stock.Β

Things haven’t always gone smoothly for Celsius though. In 2021, Flo Rida was awarded $82.6 million in compensation after a lawsuit about breaching an endorsement deal with the drink company. Not to mention another lawsuit over false advertising when Celsius stated that they included β€œno preservatives”, which led to the company removing its β€œno preservatives” text on their cans and settling for $7.8 million with the judge.

Aside from legal concerns, health concerns have been arising as a growing number of children and preteens have been drinking Celsius. The main concern is the high caffeine counts, which can lead to issues such as increased heart rates, anxiety, restlessness, and high blood pressure.

An 11th grader here at Blake, detailed that her 11-year-old brother β€œrequested for a 12 pack of Celsius for his birthday after seeing his favorite YouTubers” indulge in the drink.

Celsius’ popularity is shocking and has proven to do its job by satisfying its consumers. People are always raving about their new flavors or the ones they want to try or flavors they must have. Its range in consumers has also allowed for its great prosperity, but it’s still important to remember the health concerns. If anyone wishes to start drinking Celsius, it’s important to remember the recommended caffeine intake (around 400 mg) and to drink any energy drinks in moderation.
