Students in Game Development make Board Games!

TV Quizzes, raiding safes, and an adventure across Candy Chaos, our game development class has begun the first major project of the year, in which they make board games!

Students in the Game Development class have been spending their class time making games, from guessing movies or TV shows, or games depicting a full adventure. Recently, reporters from The Blake Beat visited the game development room after being invited by Mr. Cornell. WiIth our allotted time, we were able to play three of these games.

The first game we had the honor of playing was a movie and tv guessing game with blocks. The way to win at this game was to answer the questions based on guessing a tv or a movie, then place a block vertically if you were correct, or horizontally if you were incorrect. The creator, Brandon Marin who’s a senior, shared that dominos was his biggest inspiration, saying that β€œone time when [he] was in New York for New Year’s, [he] played a domino game.” Despite being in game development, Brandon would like to be an actor or become an animator.Β Β

Our second game we had the honor of playing was titled β€œCrack the Combo” by Noah Bowers who’s a junior. This game is played by rolling dice and getting a specific number, then taking the prize money that belongs to the specific safe assigned to the number. The winner would be the person who had the most money when it ran out. When asked about inspirations Noah cited the game β€œKnucklebone.” When asked about what projects he wants to do in the future he said β€œ[He] wants to make a video game in Unity, the game engine.”  Lucky for him, this engine is actually used to make games later in the course!

Last but not least, is β€œCandy Chaos”, a board game made by freshman Sia-Imani Lubeti. Candy Chaos has been a concept since β€œFifth or Sixth grade”, in her words. The game has a max of 4 players, and each player is assigned a character based off of different sweets. Each character is given a unique ability that can be used alongside the cards players are given either at the start of the game, or after using one of their previously owned cards. To which then is shuffled into the deck after use. In the future, she plans on creating a visual novel, allowing the players to learn more about the characters and world she created.

All the games that we were able to play were fun. If there’s any students that have been hesitating on attending this class, then we encourage you to try it out, especially if you’re a sophomore.
