“It’s Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus” Old Magic or New Sorcery?

Everyone should know The Sanderson sisters from the Disney Halloween classic, Hocus Pocus. It has been a long 29 years, but the sisters are finally back! The Sanderson sisters, Winifred, Mary, and Sarah are a memorable coven of fictional witches that are brought back to life. The motive of the havoc they wreak is to become immortal and take revenge on Salem. 

With the new movie’s release, Winifred, Mary, and Sarah are ready to run amok once again. At the beginning of the film, the audience gains insight into the past of the coven we all know and love today. You learn that the sister’s father died and left them in the hands of the village reverend. You also come to learn the origins of Winifred’s one-eyed spell book. You even get a glimpse into how the sisters acted when they were young and come to understand how that affected who they’ve become. 

Hocus Pocus 2 is about three young women who accidentally bring the Sanderson sisters back to modern-day Salem where they must figure out how to stop the child-hungry witches from wreaking havoc on the world once again. The inclusions of musical outbreaks within this film are exciting and funny. Some of the scenes that were put into the movie were like music to my ears. The iconic stage scene from the original, where the sisters bewitch a party of people is recreated in this new movie. Some of the lyrics are the same so real fans can sing along.

The original Hocus Pocus will always be more iconic and my personal favorite, but I can appreciate the cool backstories and added information that was untold in the first one. I have also come to admire the possible new witch coven, that we hopefully will see in future films of the franchise. If you, like me, stuck around for the end credits , you’ll know  that this probably isn’t the last we’ll see of the Sanderson sisters.
