BSU’s Eubie Blake Birthday Party Bash
In honor of our schoolβs namesake, Ms. Givens, the club sponsor for the Black Student Union, hosted a cute little birthday party for Eubie Blake! During lunch on February 6th, the birthday bash was held in the amphitheater, and students needed to have a ticket to enter, but the party was full either way!

As students entered, there was soft jazz music playing, and a big βhappy birthdayβ sign projected on the projection screen. Students were given a slice of cake each with a cup of their choice of Arizona Iced Tea. The first bit of the party, students were hanging out, enjoying their time with their friends, dessert, and jazz music. In the middle, there was a short speech made by BSU students on who Eubie Blake was and what he accomplished during his lifetime. After that, two students, seniors Matthew and Victoria, each performed a different composition created by Eubie Blake himself! Both students played wonderfully, spreading the beauty and influence of the music Blake played and created.

Ms. Givens organized this party because she thinks that βif a school is named after someone, you should know about that person and what their accomplishments were.β She wanted the students to know about Blake since our school is named after him, and he was an influential figure during the Harlem Renaissance. Overall, the celebration of Eubie Blakeβs birthday is a great way to kick off Black History Month at BHS!
