Halloween The Game was officially released on September 8th 2026, but iβve been playing it on early release for pre-order since September 4th. Is this game worth your money? Letβs find out!
Halloween The Game is Illfonicβs latest addition to their asymmetrical horror game line up, co-produced by Gun Interactive. Illfonic released Friday the 13th The Game back in 2017, and unfortunately due to a legal battle, had to pause and eventually cut support for the game leading to its full shutdown. In 2020, Illfonic released Predator Hunting Grounds, which still gets support and updates to this day due to the companyβs hard work and battle to keep the license. In 2024 they released Killer Klowns From Outer Space The Game! Which was abandoned after about 3 months after releaseβ¦ But dont worry! Gun Interactive made Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Game back in 2023 which is to this day- oh waitβ¦ that game is no longer receiving updates or support either. Are we noticing a pattern here? Apart from Predator Hunting Grounds, all these horror asym games have become slowly dying relics of the past. Will Halloween The Game share the same fate? Personally I would say no.
Letβs start with the year 1 road map. While not revealed yet, during a Q&A, developers at Illfonic said they have a roadmap of updates and treats for the first year of the game. Along with the MANY challenges, levels, unlockables, and prestiges that are available, Halloween seems to be loaded up for longevity. The game has plenty of opportunities, even with the focus being on the 1978 film, to include updates for the handful of sequels that the franchise has.
Now, the gameplay! This game feels a lot like Friday The 13th The Game, which is a GOOD thing. Once that game had its support cut due to the legal battle, it still had YEARS of players continuing to play the game until its very last breath. I believe this familiarity will be an attraction to those people. Halloween The Game has those similarities and builds on them, giving it a fresh playthrough. In the game, you can either play as Michael Myers or the civilians. The civilians include characters from the film, and characters created for the game, building on the 1978 story. As a civilian you have a plethora of starting items that you can obtain from leveling up specific characters. During a match, you must speak to residents of Haddonfield, convince them of the Shape that’s lurking around their town, and help them escape. While you can’t kill the Boogeyman, as a civilian you have tools to protect yourself. You have pocket knives that you can use to escape Michaelβs grasp if he gets a hold of you, and plenty of melee weapons around the map. You also have a deck of cards that you can pull from throughout the match, that give you numerous buffs and perks. If your life does end up being taken by Myers, you’re not out of luck. Your teammates who are still alive can call you back as THE Dr. Loomis, and, if you’re lucky, you can be dealt a card that lets you rejoin the match as a police officer.
Now, for the man, the myth, the legend, Michael Myers. When playing The Shape, you can start the match with a variety of weapons that you can unlock by leveling up. You can choose from 6 unique perks, each making a drastic difference in how you play. As Michael, you start the match with 3 special targets, 5 normal residents, and 4 residents that are actual players. Your job is to stalk them and kill them all. The more you stalk someone before you kill them, the stronger you get. You can close opened escape routes, hide or display bodies, and destroy power and phone lines. This game PERFECTLY captures the essence of the 1978 Shape.
With all these goodies, there’s even a story mode, (Which is honestly just a glorified tutorial for Michael) that allows you to play through the original film. With everything this game has to offer, I feel that it is definitely worth its price. And I feel that even when initial hype starts to fade, there are enough of us Halloweenies to keep this game thriving. I definitely recommend this game, Itβs Halloween, everyone’s entitled to one good scare!
