As cold weather conditions start to appear in the school year, schools usually close down for safety. MCPS has explained what they had planned for the previous 21-21 school year in terms of closure. With the plan of deciding whether to extend the school year or take away some of the closure days to begin with, the board of education came up with the option to try and bring back virtual education days to make up for the days we lost previously.
Announcements for closures or delays are issued by 5:00 am day of (unless planned and released before hand). If MCPS decides to close school during the school day, after it starts, that will be announced by 11 am.
On Nov. 28, MCPS announced an emergency closure. MCPS has set emergency closure days for the year. Snow days or plane crashes (in this case) use one of those days and once MCPS exceeds those days off, they start to add days during and to the school year.
Depending on the amount of days there would be closure, it would have an effect towards spring break in possibly days being cut short for MCPS.
(Update: Jan. 13) MCPS released a new color coded system that determines whether we have an emergency closure.
Green- Normal operations, schools and offices open on time.
Yellow– Two hour delay, school will open 2 hours later than regular.
Blue– Early closure, schools will close 2.5 hours earlier.
Orange- School is closed, but offices are open.
Red- Schools and offices closed.
Purple- Virtual learning day.
