Track team travels out of state to run against faster students

With a new season ahead of them and an experienced team ready to run, the Track and Field team is looking to expand their horizons and compete on a higher level.

This years team is progressing on both their goals and mindsets as they focus on individually qualifying for states and nationals. “My goal for the season is to qualify for nationals in the 500 and possibly the 300 and then in all my relays and I also want to break a record,” says senior sprinter Kenya Allison.

This season the team will be traveling out of state for the majority of their meets including to New York, Kentucky and Virginia. Once the team goes out of state and out of the county, they will be competing at a higher level and against faster competition. “I feel like the traveling has given us exposure and exposure is what we need so the colleges can scout us and help us get into college for free which is one of the main goals of our team,” adds senior sprinter Nathan Phillips.

As they prepare for upcoming meets, the team is working on integrating the sprinters and the distance runners to make a more unified team. Their overall attitude is both more mature and focused than previous years. “This year we’re more experienced and we know what our goals are so we’re trying to aim for records and stuff.  We’re definitely more focused and for me personally, I’ve gotten stronger and faster,”, adds Allison.

An important aspect of running is being a team. This year they have ten seniors and juniors that are working hard to improve personally and also welcome new faces onto the team. “You need to learn how to work with a team. You learn how to work for yourself and get better. You learn how to strive for something greater,” says Phillips.
